Gardener's Tips June
Flower Garden
· Tie in sweet peas and other climbing plants
· Clip box hedges and topiary to keep them neat
· Fill in gaps in the border with bedding plants
· Cut back spring flowering perennials
Kitchen Garden
· Place straw around strawberry plants
· Thin out any congested crops e.g. carrots
· Sow corps such as swede, cauliflower, lettuce, peas etc
· Weed the onion rows
· As you continue to harvest early crops, clean the soil, sprinkle on some organic fertilizer and sow your next crop.
· Some early potatoes will be ready to harvest now
· Continue pulling rhubarb until the end of June, then give it a rest to recover its strength
Greenhouse
· Put up greenhouse shading in preparation for sunny days
· Plant corps such as tomatoes and cucumbers into containers
· Keep a close eye on the watering and feed regularly
· Keep well ventilated
· Damp down regularly to increase humidity
The Lawn
· Remove weeds
· Edge the lawns with an edging iron
· Mow lawns weekly, gradually reducing the height of the cut
· Water the lawn during dry periods
· Green up the lawn with a soluble lawn food
General Advice
· Ensure newly planted trees and shrubs are watered well
· Scoop duckweed off ponds with a net or a sieve
· Ensure a good supply of fresh water for wild birds
· Enjoy the garden and brighten it up with some flares, lighting etc.
· Sit back and appreciate you hard work so far.
